Holiday Gift Ideas for Homestead Kids

1. Gardening Tools
My kids love to help in the garden, but they also like to use tools for non gardening activities as well. What I love about these tools is that they are made of wood and metal, not plastic, and can hold up to some hard core use. We got a set quite a few years ago and they are still going strong! The worst part about our set-the kids will fight over who gets to use them. I guess Santa will have to bring us another set or two…

2. Oakiewear Suits
These seriously are the best rainsuits ever! They are actually quite versatile. They are great to hike in, to splash in puddles and even worn as snowsuits. My kids will layer up underneath and pull these on over the top and are very comfortable in the snow and cold temperatures. They are also a big hit at the ocean!
Being dry is a huge game changer when it comes to kids playing outside. The quickest way to get too cold is to get wet, and these suits are perfectly designed to keep the littles dry and ready to play.
Whether you are working on the farm, hiking a mountain or just splashing in puddles, these suits are a must have for kids, especially in the PNW.
3. Kid Size Hammer
I got these for my kids a couple of Christmases ago and they are a great homestead tool for little ones! They have learned to hammer nails into scrap boards and stumps and they also love to chisel away at an ice block with it in the winter time. Of course you need to make sure to teach your kids how to handle tools appropriatly, but I feel they tend to rise to the occasion and take it seriously. Trusting a child to use a real tool helps them build confidence in themselves.
4. Carhartt Overalls
Overalls are an excellent choice for homestead activities or for rough and tumble kids. We consider these our kids’ “work clothes” and they will don these for painting, work-site visits, fence building, or any other work type activity. I got our first pair second-hand, and they are still in good enough shape for my second child to wear now. I’m sure my third child will make it into the same pair too. They are tough, just like our homestead kids!
5. Slackline
Slacklines are a fun and adventurous outdoor activity for kids! It helps improve balance and coordination and builds confidence and core strength. It is so fun seeing new kids come to the homestead and work up the courage to try this. When they do, they are so proud of themselves for trying and for accomplishing an exciting challenge. Even the adults will have fun with this one!

6. A Mud Kitchen
A mud kitchen really is just what you make it. While we don’t have an official Pinterest-worthy mud kitchen ourselves, my kids enjoy a miscellaneous collection of second hand bowls, cups, plastic tubs, plastic play tools and sticks. They also have kids-sized wheelbarrows and carts and open access to water.
It really is as simple as that! Hit up the goodwill for some frugal mud kitchen finds.

For the littlest garden lovers and even the big kids too!
8. Gardening Gloves
Kids appreciate nice gloves the same as adults do. These gloves are made out of the same material as my gardening gloves, snug and comfy! We’ve tried various pairs of kids gloves in the past and they are either too hard to get on or aren’t comfortable for them to wear. I can’t wait to put these into my kids’ stockings this Christmas!
9. Metal Tonka Truck
We have lots of children visiting our homestead and these Tonka trucks are always a huge hit! They are sturdy and practically indestructible. The kids use them as part of their “mud kitchen”, pile rocks in the back to dump out or even try to sit on top while they push each other around. Like I said, indestructible.
They will play with them in the rain, in the sun or on a train…
10. Metal Watering Can
Every plastic watering can I have ever owned has never lasted more than a year or two. Once the kids came along, that became an even shorter lifespan. The metal watering cans take quite a beating too, but so far have lasted much longer for us.
Kids love to water things! You might not like the things they end up watering, but you can definitly count on them to make use of these.
A pretty frugal and entertaining tool, watering cans are a great gift for kids ages 1-100.
